WhatsApp API pricing in Nigeria: Meta rates from 1 Oct 2026, a bill in naira and WhatsApp vs SMS
What Meta charges per WhatsApp message to Nigerian numbers, why it is in US dollars, the October 2026 service change, a monthly bill in naira for a Lagos store, OTP costs and WhatsApp vs SMS.

In short
Meta charges US$0.0516 per delivered marketing message and US$0.0067 per delivered utility, authentication or paid service message to Nigerian (+234) numbers (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026). At an illustrative ₦1,550 to the dollar that is about ₦80 and ₦10.39. Nigeria is billed in US dollars, not naira. Each business number gets 1,000 free service replies a month, and chats opened from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad are free for up to 7 days. Your provider's platform fee comes on top.
Key takeaways
- Nigeria is a standalone market on Meta's card: US$0.0516 per delivered marketing message and US$0.0067 per utility message (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026).
- Meta has no naira rate card; Nigerian rates are in US dollars, so every naira figure on this page is an illustrative conversion.
- The first 1,000 service replies per number per month are free; after that each costs US$0.0067 (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026).
- A marketing message costs more than seven times a utility message to +234 numbers, so build the plan around receipts and reminders.
- Meta's Nigeria rates did not change on 1 Oct 2026; the free-service rules did.
- One bulk SMS page can be cheaper than one WhatsApp utility message in Nigeria; WhatsApp wins on long, rich or two-way messages.
Meta's rates for Nigerian numbers
Meta charges for each delivered template, by its category and by the recipient's country code. Nigeria (+234) has its own line on Meta's price list rather than sitting in the 'Rest of Africa' group, and its rates are higher than its neighbours'. From Meta's USD rate card effective 1 Oct 2026:
| Category | Typical Nigerian use | Meta rate (USD) | Illustrative naira (at ₦1,550 per US$1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Black Friday and Christmas sales, new arrivals, win-back offers | US$0.0516 | ₦79.98 |
| Utility | Loan repayment due, school fees balance, order dispatched, appointment reminder | US$0.0067 | ₦10.39 |
| Authentication | Login and transaction one-time passwords | US$0.0067 | ₦10.39 |
| Service | Free-form replies in the 24-hour window, after the free 1,000 per number per month | US$0.0067 | ₦10.39 |
These amounts are the same as on Meta's 1 Jul 2026 card. Meta changes rates only on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, with notice, so look at the card again at the start of each quarter.
Why it is in dollars, and what that means for you
Meta bills in 16 currencies, and the naira is not one of them, so the rates for Nigerian numbers are set in US dollars. The naira column above uses an illustrative ₦1,550 to the dollar to keep the arithmetic readable. It is not a Meta price and not a forecast; the naira has moved sharply in recent years, and your actual cost depends on the currency your provider bills in and the exchange rate it applies. When a provider quotes you in naira, ask which exchange rate it uses and how often it updates it.
Meta's pricing page does not say whether Nigerian VAT applies on top of these rates. Ask your provider to show VAT separately and confirm the treatment with your accountant.
Authentication codes sent from abroad
Meta lists Nigeria among its authentication-international markets. When an eligible business registered in another country sends login codes to +234 numbers, a higher rate applies: US$0.0750 per delivered message on the USD rate card effective 1 Oct 2026. A Nigerian fintech sending codes to its Nigerian customers pays the standard authentication rate in the table above.
What changed on 1 October 2026
- Service replies: 1,000 free per business phone number per month, then paid. A service message is a free-form reply inside the 24-hour customer service window. From the 1,001st reply in a calendar month, each one to a Nigerian number costs US$0.0067 (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026). Unused free replies do not carry over.
- Utility templates inside an open window are now charged. Between 1 Jul 2025 and 30 Sep 2026 they were free if the customer had written in the past 24 hours.
- No payment method, no paid service replies. If Meta cannot bill the account, service messages stop after the free 1,000. On Broadchat the equivalent is an empty messaging wallet.
- Not changed: the WhatsApp Business app on a phone stays free, and the Nigeria rates themselves stayed where they were.
Who feels it: busy customer-care lines. A Lagos logistics company answering 5,000 'where is my parcel?' chats a month now pays for 4,000 of them: 4,000 × US$0.0067 = US$26.80 (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026), about ₦41,540 at the illustrative rate. A chatbot that answers tracking questions in one reply instead of three cuts that bill directly.
What is still free
- The first 1,000 service replies per number per month.
- All messages in a conversation that started from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad on Facebook or Instagram, for up to 7 days, if you reply within 24 hours: the free entry point window. Nigerian stores that already advertise on Instagram should route ads to WhatsApp for this reason; our guide to free messages from Click-to-WhatsApp ads explains how.
- Templates that are not delivered, such as those sent to numbers not on WhatsApp. Meta charges per delivered message; ask whether your provider charges per attempt.
- Messages typed in the WhatsApp Business app on a coexistence number, which Meta opened to Nigeria in April 2026.
A worked monthly bill in naira
An illustrative example. Adaeze runs Kemi & Co., a women's fashion store in Lekki on Shopify, delivering across Lagos and by courier to Abuja and Port Harcourt, with most orders paid on delivery. In a normal month:
| Messages | Count | Meta rate (rate card effective 1 Oct 2026) | USD | Naira at ₦1,550 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Order confirmed, pay-on-delivery check, dispatched (utility) | 8,000 | US$0.0067 | US$53.60 | ₦83,080 |
| Christmas sale to opted-in customers (marketing) | 1,500 | US$0.0516 | US$77.40 | ₦119,970 |
| Login codes for the store app (authentication) | 1,000 | US$0.0067 | US$6.70 | ₦10,385 |
| Customer-care replies: 3,500, of which 1,000 free (service) | 2,500 | US$0.0067 | US$16.75 | ₦25,963 |
| Meta total | US$154.45 | ₦239,398 |
Half of the bill is one 1,500-message marketing campaign, while 8,000 order updates cost less. To bring it down: send the sale only to customers who ordered or clicked in the past six months, run Instagram ads that open WhatsApp so new chats fall into the free 7-day window, and let a chatbot answer 'how much is delivery to Abuja?' in one reply. Sending the promotion as a utility template does not work: Meta reviews template categories and moves promotional content to marketing.
WhatsApp versus SMS in Nigeria
Bulk SMS is cheap in Nigeria. On 2 Nov 2026 BulkSMS Nigeria's pricing page listed one rate of ₦6.49 an SMS page to all Nigerian networks, excluding 7.5% VAT. Meta's utility rate is US$0.0067 per delivered message (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026), about ₦10.39 at the illustrative rate. So for a short alert, one SMS page can cost less than one WhatsApp message. The comparison changes with what the message has to do:
| Bulk SMS | WhatsApp utility template | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 160 characters per page; longer texts are billed as several pages | Up to 1,024 characters in the body, billed as one message |
| Content | Text only | Image, PDF (a statement, receipt or waybill), buttons, links |
| Replies | Often one-way from a sender ID | Customer replies in the same chat; free-form replies are service messages |
| Status | Delivery reports | Delivered and read status |
| Reach | Every phone on the network | People on WhatsApp who opted in |
A loan reminder that needs two SMS pages (₦12.98 before VAT at the price above) is already more than one WhatsApp utility message, and the WhatsApp version can carry a Pay now button linking to your own Paystack page. For one-time passwords, many Nigerian fintechs send by WhatsApp first and fall back to SMS when the number is not on WhatsApp; see OTP and authentication on WhatsApp. Our guide to cutting WhatsApp API costs has more ways to keep the bill down.
Where the platform fee fits
Meta's charge is only part of what you pay. Providers selling in Nigeria charge for their software as a monthly plan in naira or dollars, a per-account fee, a setup fee, or per-message prices that already include Meta's charge. When you compare quotes, ask each one:
- Its price per category next to Meta's rate card, so you can see the markup.
- The billing currency and the exchange rate it uses for naira.
- Whether VAT is included.
- Whether unused credit expires, and whether you can pay by Paystack, Flutterwave or bank transfer.
In Nigeria, Broadchat is sold only through local partners, who set the plan price in naira and the messaging rates over Meta's base rate; messaging is prepaid into a wallet. Published prices of other providers are in WhatsApp API providers in Nigeria compared, companies that want to resell can read the white-label WhatsApp API for Nigerian partners, and the basics are on WhatsApp Business API in Nigeria.

How much does a WhatsApp OTP cost in Nigeria?

Are WhatsApp Business replies still free in Nigeria?
The first 1,000 service replies per business number per month are free. After that each costs US$0.0067 to a Nigerian number (Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026). The WhatsApp Business app on a phone stays free; the charge applies to the API.
Is WhatsApp cheaper than SMS in Nigeria?
Not always. One short SMS page can cost less than Meta's utility rate for Nigeria. WhatsApp is better value for long messages, messages with a PDF, image or button, and conversations where the customer replies.
