Before you submit these templates
- Submit restock alerts as Marketing. They encourage a new purchase, which is marketing in Meta's categorisation guide, even when the customer asked to be told.
- Only the back-order update (an item from the customer's existing order is now in stock) belongs in Utility, and it must stay free of product suggestions.
- Use variables for the product, price and quantity with realistic samples, so one template serves your whole catalogue.
- Upload a real product photo as the image header sample.
- For pharmacies, do not name medical conditions or prescription medicines in a marketing template; Meta's Commerce Policy restricts them.
- Do not end the body with a variable; close with an action line such as "Tap below to order."
- Add a Stop alerts quick reply and remove those contacts from the product tag.
The short answer
A good back in stock message tells the customer which item is back, the price, how much came in and how to get it, and it reaches them within an hour of the restock. Send it to people who asked to be told (a Notify me button, a chat, a missed sale at the counter), not to your whole list.

Marketing, unless it is about an order they already placed
Meta's categorisation guide classes messages that promote a product or encourage a new purchase as marketing, and a utility template must be specific to a transaction the customer already has. A restock alert invites a new purchase, so submit it as marketing, even when the customer asked for it. It then needs marketing opt-in, is charged at the marketing rate (see WhatsApp API pricing) and counts towards WhatsApp's per-user marketing limits.

- Send in order of who asked first when stock is smaller than the waiting list, and say how many came in.
- Offer a hold for expensive or rare items. "Reply HOLD and we keep one until 7 pm" converts better than a link for shops that sell in person.
- One follow-up at most, only to people who clicked and did not buy, and only when stock is truly low.
- Clear the tag after the alert. Remove the product tag once someone has been told, so they do not get the same alert next time.
- Never fake scarcity. Use the real count from your stock register or inventory.
How to send these
WhatsApp Business app (free, manual). Keep a note or label of who asked for which item, and message them one by one when stock arrives; use broadcast lists of up to 256 contacts who saved your number for bigger restocks (broadcast list guide).
WhatsApp Business API. In Broadchat:
- Create the alerts in CRM → WhatsApp Templates with the Marketing category, and the back-order version with Utility.
- When a customer asks to be notified, tag them with the product in CRM → Tags (or from a chatbot step that assigns the tag).
- On restock, build the audience in CRM → Segment from that tag and send from CRM → Bulk Campaign, mapping the product, price and quantity. To send it automatically when your store or inventory system marks the item in stock, use Automations → Workflow with a Custom Webhook trigger.
- Connect HOLD and ORDER quick replies to a flow in Chatbots → Chatbots so the request reaches an agent in CRM → Live Chat.
If the item ran out after people had already ordered, start with the delay apology messages; for carts left behind, the abandoned cart templates include a cart-level restock alert; for brand-new products, the new product launch messages. How do I write a back in stock message?
Name the item, say it is back, give the price and how many came in, and add one action such as an Order now button or a HOLD reply. For example: "Good news, Priya: the indigo cushion cover set is back at ₹799. Only 40 sets came in. Tap below to order."
Is a back in stock notification a marketing or utility template?
Marketing, because it encourages a new purchase, even when the customer asked to be told. The exception is an item from an order the customer already placed: a message that it is now in stock and shipping updates their order and can be utility. Meta makes the final decision.
How fast should I send a restock alert?
Within an hour of the stock going live, and before you announce it anywhere else. People who asked to be notified expect to hear first; an alert that arrives after the item sells out again is frustrating.
How do I collect customers for back in stock alerts?
Add a Notify me option on the product page or in your WhatsApp chatbot, and note every customer who asks at the counter or in chat. Record the opt-in and tag the contact with the product, so you can send the alert to exactly those people.
What if there is less stock than people waiting?
Tell people in the order they asked, say how many units came in, and offer a short hold for those who reply first. Do not send a follow-up to everyone once it sells out; a brief sorry to people who replied late is enough.
Can I send a back in stock message in Hindi?
