Meta business verification for WhatsApp in India: documents, steps and why it fails
A practical walkthrough of Meta business verification for Indian businesses on WhatsApp: what it unlocks, which documents work, the Security Center steps, and the mismatches that cause most rejections.

In short
Meta business verification for WhatsApp confirms that your business portfolio belongs to a real, registered business. In India you enter your legal name, address, phone and an HTTPS website in Security Center, upload documents such as a certificate of incorporation, a business registration or a GST certificate if Meta cannot match your details, and confirm by email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp or domain verification. Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days. Most rejections come from details that do not exactly match the documents or a website that does not load.
Key takeaways
- Verification is one of three paths from the 250 to the 2,000 messaging tier and raises the phone number cap from 2 to 20.
- Only someone with full control of the business portfolio can start verification, from Security Center in Meta Business Suite.
- Enter the legal name and address exactly as they appear on your documents; trade names belong in your display name, not here.
- A utility bill can prove address and phone but never the legal business name, and self-filed tax documents are not accepted.
- Your website must load over HTTPS without broken links, and editing key details after verification means verifying again.
Complete Meta business verification for a WhatsApp business portfolio
Time needed: 1 h. You will need: A desktop browser, A Facebook login with full control of the business portfolio, Access to the business email inbox, phone or website DNS.
Check eligibility and access
Open Security Center in Meta Business Suite settings for the business portfolio that owns your WhatsApp account. If you cannot open it, you probably lack full control. If it shows Ineligible for verification, you do not need to verify there.
Prepare matching documents and website
Collect one document that proves the legal name and one that proves the address or phone number, all current and issued by an authority. Make sure your website loads over HTTPS and shows the same legal name.
Enter business details exactly
Click Start verification and enter the legal business name, address, phone number and website exactly as they appear on your documents. Choose your business from the matches, or select that it is not listed.
Upload documents if asked
If Meta cannot find a matching record, upload official documents. Cover personal details Meta does not need, such as the Aadhaar number of a proprietor, and use English translations with an agency stamp if the document is not in a supported language.
Confirm your connection to the business
Choose email, phone call, SMS, WhatsApp message or domain verification to prove you represent the business. An email code works best with an address on your own domain; domain verification uses a meta tag, HTML file or DNS TXT record.
Wait for the decision and act on it
Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days. Check status in Security Center. If rejected, fix the cause and appeal where offered; if approved, check that your messaging limit and display name review move forward.
What business verification does for WhatsApp
Meta business verification for WhatsApp is the check that your Meta business portfolio belongs to a legitimate, registered business and that you are authorised to represent it. You can start using the WhatsApp Business Platform without it, but verification is the most direct way past the starting limits. Meta's documentation ties it to several WhatsApp capabilities:
| Capability | Before verification | After verification |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging limit (unique people outside a customer service window, per 24 hours, per portfolio) | 250 | Eligible for 2,000, then automatic upgrades |
| Registered phone numbers per portfolio | 2 | Up to 20 |
| Message templates per Messaging account | 250 | Up to 6,000, once a number also has an approved display name |
| Display name review | Not yet eligible | Eligible as the portfolio qualifies for higher limits |
| Official Business Account request | Not eligible | One of the required conditions |
Verification is one of three paths to the 2,000 tier; the others are partner-led verification and sending 2,000 high-quality template messages in 30 days. It does not take you straight to 100,000 and it does not give you a badge. Meta says plainly that business verification is different from Meta Verified and won't give you a verified badge. See WhatsApp messaging limits in 2026 for the tiers and the WhatsApp blue tick explained for badges.
Before you start: eligibility and access
Verification happens in Security Center, a section of Settings in Meta Business Suite. Two conditions apply:
- Full control. Only a person with full control of the business portfolio can start it. If you cannot see Security Center, ask the portfolio owner to raise your access or to do it themselves.
- An eligible portfolio. Security Center shows either Start verification or Ineligible for verification. If you see the second, Meta says you do not need to complete verification there, though a specific product may still ask you to verify through another route by email or notification.
Make sure you are verifying the same portfolio that owns your WhatsApp account. Businesses that have run ads for years often have two or three portfolios created by different agencies or staff; verifying the wrong one does nothing for WhatsApp. In Broadchat, the portfolio is the one you selected in Meta's Embedded Signup window when you connected the number.
Step 1: prepare documents that match
Meta lists the primary document types it accepts. They must validate your legal business name and your official address or phone number, must not be expired and must be issued by the relevant authority:
- Certificate or articles of incorporation
- Business registration or licence document
- Government-issued business tax document, such as a tax certificate (self-filed tax documents are not accepted)
- Business bank statement
- Utility bill: accepted only for address and phone number, must show the legal business name, and never accepted to prove the legal name
Meta's list uses generic names, not Indian document names. The table below is our guide to how common Indian documents line up with Meta's categories; Meta's reviewers make the final call.
| Indian document | Closest Meta category | Proves | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate of Incorporation (MCA, for companies and LLPs) | Certificate of incorporation | Legal name | Often has the registered office too; check it matches your entry |
| GST registration certificate (Form GST REG-06) | Government-issued business tax document / registration | Legal name and principal place of business | Shows both legal name and trade name; enter the legal name |
| Udyam registration certificate | Business registration document | Legal name and address | Useful for proprietorships and partnerships |
| Shops and Establishments registration | Business licence | Name and address | Often issued in a state language; see the language note below |
| Business current-account statement | Business bank statement | Name and address | Use a recent statement in the business's name |
| Electricity or landline bill in the business name | Utility bill | Address and phone only | Never enough on its own for the legal name |
Meta also asks you to cover personal information it does not need, such as a national ID number. For a proprietorship, that means masking a proprietor's Aadhaar or personal PAN details if they appear on the document.
Get the website ready
Meta's verification article says your website must load, be HTTPS compliant and not lead to an error page; its rejection article lists a failing, non-HTTPS or broken-link website as a reason for rejection. Before you submit, open the site in a private browser window on mobile data and check that the home page, About page and footer load, that the address starts with https://, and that the legal name appears somewhere, typically in the footer or on the contact page.
Step 2: enter your business details exactly
Click Start verification and enter the legal business name, address, phone number and website. Meta's instruction is that the details must exactly match the details of your legal business entity. Meta then searches public records:
- If it finds your business, select it and continue.
- If none of the suggestions match, choose My business isn't listed or None of these match, and you will be asked to upload documents.
A worked example: Priya owns a home-decor brand called Rangoli Home, run by a private limited company, Shreeji Lifestyle Private Limited, with its registered office in Jaipur. She enters "Shreeji Lifestyle Private Limited" as the legal name, the address exactly as on the Certificate of Incorporation and GST certificate, the company landline and https://rangolihome.in, whose footer reads "Rangoli Home is a brand of Shreeji Lifestyle Private Limited". The brand name goes on WhatsApp as her display name, not into the verification form.
Step 3: upload documents if asked
Upload the clearest copy you have, ideally the original PDF downloaded from the government portal rather than a phone photo. One legal-name document plus one address or phone document is the safest combination. If the document is not in a supported language, attach an English translation with the translation agency's stamp. Do not submit invoices, letterheads or other documents your business produced itself; they are not issued by an authority.
Step 4: confirm your connection to the business
Meta needs proof that you represent the business. You choose one method:
- Email: a code sent to an address. Meta's documents article notes you may be asked to prove ownership of the website domain if you choose email, so an address on your own domain (not Gmail) is expected.
- Phone call, SMS or WhatsApp message: a code sent to the business phone number you entered.
- Domain verification: prove you control the website by adding a meta tag to the home page, uploading an HTML file or adding a DNS TXT record at your registrar, from Settings → Brand safety → Domains.
Domain verification is often the simplest route when the phone number in public records is an old landline nobody answers, or when the business email is on Gmail. Enter the root domain only (rangolihome.in, not www.rangolihome.in) and confirm the TXT record has propagated before clicking Verify domain.
Click Done when you have confirmed the code. You will see a confirmation that the submission was received.
Step 5: wait for the decision and act on it
Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days, and you are notified when the review is complete. Track the status in Security Center. If you started verification from another product, check the status there.
Once approved:
- WhatsApp may raise your messaging limit to 2,000 after reviewing your messaging quality, and your phone number cap rises to 20.
- Your display name becomes eligible for review if it has not been reviewed yet.
- Avoid editing core details. Changing the legal name, country, phone number, website or tax ID of a verified business means verifying again. Meta also notes you may not be able to edit business details at all when the portfolio is used for a WhatsApp Business account.
Why verification gets rejected, and the fix
Meta's rejection article lists false or misleading information, claiming a business you are not authorised to represent, trying to get around the review, and a website that fails to load, is not HTTPS or links to an error. In practice, most problems are mismatches:
| What went wrong | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trade name entered as legal name | "Rangoli Home" instead of "Shreeji Lifestyle Private Limited" | Use the legal name from the certificate; keep the brand for the display name |
| Proprietorship name confusion | GST shows legal name "Meera Sharma" and trade name "Sunrise Clinic" | Enter the legal name as on the document, and make the trade name and owner visible on the website |
| Address differs from documents | Shop address entered, registered office on the certificate | Enter the address on the document, character for character where possible |
| Utility bill used for the legal name | Electricity bill as the only document | Add a certificate of incorporation, registration or GST certificate |
| Self-made or expired document | Letterhead declaration, lapsed trade licence | Upload a current, authority-issued document |
| Website problems | http only, under construction, broken contact link | Fix HTTPS and broken pages before submitting |
| Unsupported language | Marathi-only certificate | Add a stamped English translation |
| Wrong portfolio verified | Ads portfolio verified, WhatsApp is in another | Verify the portfolio that owns the WhatsApp account |
If you are rejected, Meta says you may be able to appeal from Security Center or the platform where you began. Fix the cause before appealing; an appeal that repeats the same mismatch is unlikely to succeed.
After verification: next steps on WhatsApp
With the portfolio verified, check your channel's messaging limit and display name status. In Broadchat both appear on the channel card under Channels → All Channels. If you are still setting up, our guide on how to get the WhatsApp Business API in India puts verification in the context of the whole process, and the WhatsApp Business API overview explains the basics. Agencies onboarding several clients through the partner program can share this checklist with each client before signup, because every client verifies its own portfolio.

Frequently asked questions
Is Meta business verification mandatory for the WhatsApp Business API?
No. You can start sending without it, at the 250 tier. It is one of three ways to reach the 2,000 tier and it raises the phone number cap from 2 to 20, so most businesses do it early.
Can a sole proprietorship get verified?
Yes, if it is registered and has authority-issued documents in its name, such as a GST registration certificate or Udyam registration, and a website that shows the business. Enter the legal name exactly as it appears on the document.
Is a PAN card enough for Meta business verification?
A business PAN can support the legal name, but it does not show an address. Pair it with a document that proves the address or phone number, such as a GST certificate, a bank statement or a utility bill in the business name.
How long does Meta business verification take?
Meta says a decision can take up to 14 business days. It can be quicker, but plan for two weeks, and do not edit your business details while the review is open.
Does business verification give me the WhatsApp green tick?
No. Meta states that business verification is different from Meta Verified and won't give you a verified badge. It is one of the conditions for requesting an Official Business Account.
