In short

There are two ways to get a WhatsApp blue tick. An Official Business Account (OBA) is a free status Meta grants to a Business Platform number after review: the business must follow policy, be on the platform for 30 days, be business-verified, have two-step verification on and an approved display name, and Meta also looks for a notable brand. Meta Verified is a paid subscription with a verified badge and support benefits, available for eligible businesses and regions. Business verification alone gives no badge, and no provider can promise either one.

Key takeaways

  • Business verification in Meta Business Suite is not a badge; Meta says plainly that it won't give you a verified badge.
  • An Official Business Account needs policy compliance, 30 days on the platform, business verification, two-step verification and an approved display name.
  • Meta's Help Center says an Official Business Account is for notable businesses with substantial coverage in widely read news publications.
  • A denied OBA request can be submitted again after 30 days; meanwhile your business profile can still carry your logo, website and description.
  • Meta Verified is a paid, auto-renewing subscription whose plans and availability vary by region, app and account.

The WhatsApp blue tick is the verified badge shown next to a business name. Businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform can get it in two different ways: an Official Business Account (OBA), which Meta grants for free after reviewing a request, or Meta Verified, a paid subscription. They have different requirements, and neither one comes with business verification or with signing up through a provider. This article explains how each route works in 2026, using Meta's documentation as checked on 12 October 2026, and helps you decide which one, if either, is realistic for your business.

First, what business verification does not do

Business verification in Meta Business Suite confirms that your business portfolio belongs to a real, registered business. It unlocks things such as the 2,000 messaging tier and more phone numbers. Meta's Help Center is explicit that it is different from Meta Verified and won't give you a verified badge. It is, however, one of the conditions for applying for an OBA, so it is the first step on that route. Our Meta business verification guide covers the documents and steps for Indian businesses.

Route 1: Official Business Account

An Official Business Account is a status given to a business phone number owned by a business that Meta has verified as authentic against its criteria. OBA numbers show a blue checkmark beside the name in the contacts view. There is no fee for the status itself.

Eligibility

Meta's developer documentation lists five conditions, all of which must be met:

  1. The business complies with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy.
  2. The business has been registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days.
  3. The business portfolio that owns the number has passed business verification.
  4. The phone number has two-step verification enabled.
  5. The number's display name has been approved.

On top of these, Meta's Help Center says that to have an OBA a business must be considered notable: a well-known business with a substantial presence in news articles from publications with sizable audiences. Meta does not publish a test for notability. Paid placements and press releases on your own site are unlikely to carry much weight; independent coverage in widely read publications is what the wording points to.

Meta also says it does not grant OBA status to business employees, test accounts or WhatsApp Business app phone numbers.

How to request it

In WhatsApp Manager → Overview, open the business phone number, make sure two-step verification is enabled, then go to Phone numbers → Profile → Official business account and click Submit Request. Developers can check progress through the official_business_account field on the phone number, which returns an oba_status. If you meet the criteria but do not see the option, Meta suggests contacting your Meta point of contact, your solution provider's support or Meta Support.

If the request is denied

A denial means Meta decided the account does not meet the requirements at this time. You must wait 30 days before submitting another request. The denial does not stop you messaging, and you can still fill in your business profile (profile picture, email, website and description) at any time.

Practical effects of OBA status

  • Search. Meta notes that numbers without OBA status do not appear in WhatsApp's in-app search unless the user has saved the number; OBA status helps discoverability.
  • Display name changes. Once a number is an OBA, you cannot change its display name yourself; you have to contact Meta direct support. Choose the name carefully before applying. Our article on WhatsApp display name rules explains what Meta approves.

Route 2: Meta Verified for businesses

Meta Verified is a paid subscription for businesses. Meta's Help Center describes benefits such as a verified badge, impersonation protection and enhanced support, with higher plans (named Standard, Plus, Premium and Max) adding features such as featured profiles. Key points from Meta's page:

  • Eligible assets include an Instagram professional profile, a Facebook business Page and a WhatsApp business profile. You can usually verify up to two assets from the same business portfolio, for example one Facebook Page and one WhatsApp business profile.
  • Plans, benefits and availability vary by region, by app and by account. To see what your business can buy, you start the sign-up process.
  • It renews automatically each billing period until cancelled.
  • Advanced Protection must be turned on for the business portfolio that holds the verified assets, and it cannot be turned off while the subscription is active.
  • You go through a review of your business details as part of signing up.

We do not quote a price: Meta shows it during sign-up and it varies by plan and market. Meta's main Meta Verified article is written for Facebook and Instagram; whether a particular Business Platform number can subscribe is something you confirm in Meta Business Suite, not something a provider can switch on.

Which route fits your business?

  • A well-known brand with independent press coverage (a national retailer, a bank, a large edtech company): apply for an OBA once the five conditions are met. It costs nothing, and the notability bar is the main hurdle.
  • A growing D2C brand or local business without national coverage, such as Rangoli Home in Jaipur: an OBA request is likely to be refused on notability. Complete business verification, get the display name approved, build a complete business profile and look at Meta Verified if it is offered for your account.
  • A business worried about impersonation (fake numbers using its logo to scam customers): Meta Verified's impersonation protection is designed for that problem; an OBA is about the authenticity of one number.
  • Any business: a badge does not change messaging limits, template approval or pricing. Customers trust a clear display name, a complete profile and messages they expected; those are within your control.

Preparing in Broadchat

Broadchat cannot grant or speed up a badge, but it helps you meet the conditions you control. Connect the number through Meta's Embedded Signup from Channels → All Channels, keep an eye on the display name and number status on the channel card, set the two-step verification PIN for your numbers from the channel settings while Meta still requires one, and keep quality high with opted-in audiences. Agencies serving larger brands through the partner program can use this checklist before helping a client submit an OBA request. For the wider basics, start with what the WhatsApp Business API is.

Frequently asked questions

Does business verification give me a blue tick on WhatsApp?

No. Meta states that verifying your business in Meta Business Suite is different from Meta Verified and won't give you a verified badge. It is one of the conditions for applying for an Official Business Account.

How long after joining the WhatsApp Business Platform can I apply for an Official Business Account?

Meta requires the business to have been registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days, along with business verification, two-step verification on the number and an approved display name.

My Official Business Account request was rejected. When can I try again?

After 30 days. Use the time to strengthen what Meta looks at, especially independent coverage of your brand in widely read publications and a display name that clearly matches your business.

Can I get a blue tick on a number that uses the WhatsApp Business app?

Meta says it does not grant Official Business Account status to WhatsApp Business app phone numbers. Meta Verified lists a WhatsApp business profile as an eligible asset, subject to availability for your region and account.

Can I change my display name after getting an Official Business Account?

Not by yourself. Meta's documentation says numbers with Official Business Account status must contact direct support to change the display name.
