WhatsApp standard account vs business account: what each label means, including the blue tick
Standard account, business account, verified badge, Meta Verified and Official Business Account: what customers see for each, what "registered as a standard account" means, and how a business gets each status.
By Broadchat teamPublished 9 min read
In short
A standard account is an ordinary WhatsApp Messenger account used by a person. A business account is any account created with a WhatsApp Business product, the free WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp Business Platform (API); WhatsApp labels its profile "WhatsApp Business account". If a chat says a business account is now registered as a standard account, that business has moved its number back to normal WhatsApp. A blue tick is a separate layer: it comes from Meta Verified or, for API numbers, an Official Business Account review, and Meta decides who gets it.
Key takeaways
- Standard account means regular WhatsApp Messenger; business account is the default status of any account on the WhatsApp Business app or the Business Platform.
- "Registered as a standard account" means the number stopped using the WhatsApp Business app; if it starts again, WhatsApp shows yellow notices in the chat.
- A business label is not a trust signal on its own: anyone can install the free WhatsApp Business app.
- The blue verified badge comes from Meta Verified (paid, Business app and Meta Business Suite) or an Official Business Account (API numbers, free, notability required); paying does not guarantee it.
- WhatsApp's own "Official WhatsApp Business account" chat always carries the verified badge; an unbadged account claiming to be WhatsApp is a scam.
On WhatsApp, a standard account is the ordinary WhatsApp Messenger account most people use, and a business account is any account registered with one of WhatsApp's business products. That is the short answer to WhatsApp standard account vs business account. Neither label says whether the business is genuine. Trust signals come from a separate layer: the blue verified badge, which Meta grants through Meta Verified or an Official Business Account review. Below we explain every label and notice a customer can see, what each one means, and how a business gets each status.
The labels at a glance
| What you see | What it means | How a business gets it |
|---|---|---|
| No label, normal profile | A standard WhatsApp Messenger account | Register the number on the WhatsApp app |
| Profile labelled WhatsApp Business account | The account uses the WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp Business Platform | Install the free WhatsApp Business app, or connect the number to the API |
| Yellow notice that a business account is now a standard account | The number has stopped using the WhatsApp Business app | Move the number from the Business app back to WhatsApp Messenger |
| Blue checkmark next to the name | Meta verified the account from its activity on Meta's apps or documents it provided | Meta Verified subscription (where offered) or an Official Business Account on the API; Meta decides |
| "This business uses a secure service from Meta to manage this chat" | The business uses the Cloud API, hosted by Meta | Connect the number to the WhatsApp Business Platform |
| "Official WhatsApp Business account" with the badge | WhatsApp's own chat in the Business app, used for news and tips | Only WhatsApp has it |
What "business account" means on WhatsApp
WhatsApp's Help Center says that if you tap a contact's name and they are a business, the profile is labelled as a WhatsApp Business account, and that this is "the default status for a business that creates an account on one of the WhatsApp Business products". Those products are:
- the free WhatsApp Business app, run from a phone (plus linked devices) with a business profile, catalogue, labels, quick replies and greeting and away messages; and
- the WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the WhatsApp Business API, where the number is connected to software such as a team inbox or chatbot instead of a phone app.
So "business account" tells you the other side is a business, not a person. It does not tell you the business is large, registered or checked by Meta. A home baker in Indore and a national bank can both show the same label. If the chat is on the API, WhatsApp may also add a notice about how messages are managed; our article on "this chat is with a business account" explains each notice and what it means for privacy.
What "standard account" means, and the "registered as a standard account" notice
A standard account is a regular WhatsApp Messenger account: no business profile, catalogue or business tools. WhatsApp's Help Center has an article titled "Business account becomes a standard account". It says a business might decide to stop using the WhatsApp Business app at any time, and that if it starts using the WhatsApp Business app again, WhatsApp lets you know with yellow messages inside the chat.
That is what the notice people search for means. Wording such as "This business account is now registered as a standard account" or "This account was previously a business account" tells you the person behind the number moved it from the WhatsApp Business app back to normal WhatsApp. It is not an error, a ban or a warning about you.
Common reasons a number moves back:
- A shopkeeper tried the Business app and went back to the app they knew.
- A sole trader closed the business and kept the number for personal use.
- The business moved its customer chats to a different number and freed the old one.
If you are the business making the switch, note WhatsApp's warning: some account information can move from the Business app to WhatsApp Messenger, but Business-only features such as catalogue items and collections cannot. Customers who chat with you will see the change. If you want to stop a contact from messaging you after such a change, you can block them as usual.
The blue verified badge
WhatsApp's Help Center describes a verified badge as a blue checkmark meaning Meta has verified the account based on its activity across Meta technologies, or on information or documents the business provided. It can appear in the calls tab, on business profiles, on context cards, in chats and on incoming calls from verified businesses. Some verified accounts belong to a notable brand; others subscribe to a Meta product. There are two routes for a business:
Meta Verified for Business (WhatsApp Business app)
Meta Verified is a paid monthly subscription. In the WhatsApp Business app you check availability under Settings or Business Tools, then Meta Verified; if the option is missing, it is not available to you yet. WhatsApp lists four plans, Business Standard, Business Plus, Business Premium and Business Max. All include a verified badge, impersonation protection and in-app support; higher plans add more verified channels, more linked devices, protected business accounts and business broadcasts.
To be eligible, WhatsApp says the applicant must be at least 18, with a number in a country where it is offered, and the Business app account must have been on the app for a certain number of days, have sent a message recently, and have a profile name and picture. Review can take up to three business days. Two cautions from WhatsApp itself: subscribing does not guarantee a badge (you may be verified automatically, asked for documents, or subscribed without a verification option), and a badge can be removed later if extra checks such as an ID document and selfie are not completed. We do not quote a price; WhatsApp shows current prices at sign-up, and plans vary by business and location.
Official Business Account (WhatsApp Business API)
An Official Business Account is a free status for a number on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta requires policy compliance, 30 days on the platform, business verification, two-step verification and an approved display name, and also looks for a notable brand. Meta does not grant it to Business app numbers. The criteria, the request steps and what to do after a denial are in our article on the WhatsApp blue tick: OBA vs Meta Verified.
"WhatsApp official business account": two different things
People searching for "WhatsApp official business account" usually mean the blue-tick status above. WhatsApp also runs its own official chat inside the WhatsApp Business app to send news and tips. WhatsApp says that chat is marked with the verified badge and the description "Official WhatsApp Business account", that you cannot message it, and that it never asks for personal information. Any account without the badge that claims to be WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business is a scam: report and block it.
What this means for customers and for businesses
For customers: a business label tells you who you are talking to, not whether to trust them. Check how the chat started, the profile details and, where present, the blue badge. Never share OTPs, UPI PINs or card numbers in a chat.
For businesses, a worked example. Arjun runs Rangoli Home, a home-decor shop in Jaipur:
- He moves his shop number from personal WhatsApp to the free WhatsApp Business app (step-by-step in how to create a WhatsApp Business account). Customers now see a WhatsApp Business account label, his catalogue and his shop hours.
- If Meta Verified appears under Business Tools, he can subscribe for the badge and impersonation protection, knowing that the badge itself is still Meta's call.
- When chats outgrow one phone, he connects the number to the WhatsApp Business API and, once his portfolio is verified and the number has been live for 30 days, he can request an Official Business Account. The notability bar means a local shop may be refused.
If Arjun ever switched the number back to personal WhatsApp, his customers would see the "standard account" notice, and his catalogue would not come with him.
How this works in Broadchat
Broadchat is built on the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Meta, so it cannot grant or speed up a badge. Numbers connected through Meta's Embedded Signup are business accounts, and the channel card under Channels → All Channels shows the display name status, quality rating and messaging limit you need for an Official Business Account request. For the wider picture, start with what the WhatsApp Business API is. Agencies that set up business accounts for local clients can offer the API under their own brand through the partner program.

Frequently asked questions
What does "this business account is registered as a standard account" mean?
It means the number stopped using the WhatsApp Business app and is now a regular WhatsApp Messenger account. WhatsApp's Help Center says a business can stop using the Business app at any time, and if it starts again you will see yellow notices in the chat. It is not a ban or an error.
What does business account mean in WhatsApp?
It means the account was created with a WhatsApp Business product, either the WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp Business Platform. WhatsApp calls it the default status for any business on those products. It shows you are chatting with a business, not that Meta has checked the business.
Is a WhatsApp business account verified?
Not automatically. Only accounts with a blue checkmark are verified by Meta. A business gets the badge through Meta Verified, where available, or an Official Business Account on the API, and in both cases Meta decides.
Can I switch from a WhatsApp Business account back to a standard account?
Yes. WhatsApp lets you move a number from the Business app to WhatsApp Messenger. Some account information moves with it, but Business-only features such as catalogue items and collections cannot be transferred, and your contacts will see a notice in their chats.
Does paying for Meta Verified guarantee a blue tick on WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp says subscribing does not guarantee a verified badge. After you subscribe you may be verified automatically, asked for documents, or subscribed without a verification option, and you keep the plan's other benefits in each case.
How do I know a message from WhatsApp itself is real?
WhatsApp's own chat in the Business app carries the verified badge and the description Official WhatsApp Business account, you cannot reply to it, and it never asks for personal information. An unbadged account claiming to be WhatsApp is a scam.
