Definition

Template recategorisation: Template recategorisation is Meta changing the category of a WhatsApp message template, most often from utility to marketing, when its wording matches another category better than the one the business chose. Since 9 Apr 2025 Meta does this automatically, and since 15 Sep 2026 templates can be re-checked even after an earlier review confirmed their category. A business can request an appeal within 60 days.

Also called: Template recategorization, Category change, Automatic recategorization

How WhatsApp template recategorisation works

When you submit a template, you propose a template category. Meta reviews the wording against its categorisation guidelines. Until April 2025 businesses could set allow_category_change to say whether Meta might move the template; Meta removed that field on 9 Apr 2025 and now recategorises automatically.

The checks did not stop at approval. Since 15 Sep 2026 Meta can re-check a template even after a review confirmed its category. Most recategorisations move a utility message to marketing, because a promotional line slipped into a transactional message.

What happens after a change

  • The template keeps its name and content but carries the new category, and future sends are billed at that category's rate.
  • Marketing-only rules now apply, including per-user marketing limits.
  • You can request an appeal within 60 days if you believe the change is wrong.
  • Accounts that Meta has warned for misusing categories get no 24-hour notice before a utility template is switched to marketing.

Worked example: the line that changed the category

A Surat saree seller submits this as utility:

The first sentence is a textbook utility update. The second is a promotion, so Meta moves the template to marketing. The fix is to split it into two templates: the dispatch update as utility, and a separate offer template as marketing, sent only to customers who agreed to offers.

How to avoid surprises

  • Keep utility templates to one job: the update the customer is waiting for.
  • Leave out "also", "don't miss", coupons, "shop now" buttons and links to sale pages.
  • If you are unsure, submit as marketing. A correct category beats a re-categorised one, especially for accounts with a warning.
  • Watch your template list after each submission, not only on approval day.

Recategorisation in Broadchat

Broadchat syncs template status and category from Meta's webhooks, so a recategorised template shows its new category in CRM → WhatsApp Templates without a manual refresh. Check the category before you pick a template in CRM → Bulk Campaign, because it decides the cost. The message templates guide explains review in depth, and the order update templates show utility wording that stays utility.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Meta change my utility template to marketing?

Meta found wording that promotes, such as a discount, a 'shop now' prompt or an upsell. Since 9 Apr 2025 it recategorises automatically. Remove the promotional part into a separate marketing template if you want a utility version.

Can I appeal a template category change?

Yes. Meta allows an appeal to be requested within 60 days of the change. Explain why the content is transactional and specific to a customer's existing order, booking or account.

Can an approved template be recategorised later?

Yes. Since 15 Sep 2026 Meta can re-check templates even after a review confirmed the category, so a template approved months ago can still change.
