How to export a WhatsApp chat
The viewer reads the text file that WhatsApp's own Export chat option creates. Choose Without media: the file stays small (a few megabytes even for a chat that runs for years) and the PDF only needs the text.
On Android
- Open the chat or group in WhatsApp.
- Tap ⋮ (More options) at the top right, then More, then Export chat.
- Tap Without media.
- Save the file to your phone (Files or Drive), or email it to yourself if you want to use a computer. The file is called something like
WhatsApp Chat with Priya.txt.
On iPhone
- Open the chat or group in WhatsApp.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top, scroll down and tap Export Chat.
- Tap Without Media.
- Choose Save to Files. You get a
.zipfile; pick it here directly, or open it in Files to unzip it and pick the_chat.txtinside.
WhatsApp includes up to the most recent 40,000 messages in an export without media (10,000 with media). Source: WhatsApp Help Center, "How to export your chat history".
Read, search and filter the chat
A raw export is one long text file with a timestamp on every line. The viewer turns it back into a conversation: your messages on the right, everyone else on the left, a date label at the start of each day and the time under every bubble. Notices such as the encryption message or "X added Y" sit in the middle, links open in a new tab, and messages that ran over several lines keep their line breaks.
- I am: pick your own name so your side of the chat is on the right. In a one-to-one chat the tool guesses it from the file name.
- Search: type a word, a name, an order number or part of a link. Matches are highlighted and only matching messages stay.
- From / To: limit the chat to a date range, for example one month or the week of a delivery.
- Messages from: show one person only, handy in large groups.
Long chats appear 500 messages at a time, with a Show more button, so the page stays fast. The downloads always include every message that matches your filters, not only the ones on screen.
How to save the chat as PDF
Download PDF uses your browser's print function with a page layout made for chats: A4 pages, a header with the chat name and date range, bubbles that are never cut between two pages, and none of this website's menus or buttons.
On a computer
In the print dialog choose Save as PDF (Chrome, Edge) or Microsoft Print to PDF as the destination and click Save. Keep Background graphics on if you want the green and white bubble colours.
On an Android phone (Chrome)
Tap Download PDF. In the print screen, tap the printer name at the top, choose Save as PDF, then tap the round PDF button and pick a folder. If the print screen does not appear, download the HTML file instead, open it in Chrome and use ⋮ → Share → Print.
On an iPhone (Safari)
Tap Download PDF to open Print Options. Depending on your iOS version, tap the Share icon at the top and choose Save to Files, or pinch outward on the page preview to open the PDF and then share or save it. Button names vary a little between iOS versions.
Chats with more than 5,000 matching messages can take a while to prepare and may produce a PDF with hundreds of pages. Narrow the date range first if you need only part of the conversation. Photos, videos and voice notes are never drawn into the PDF: the tool reads the text only and shows each attachment's file name, or "Media omitted" for exports made without media.
Using a chat PDF as a record or evidence
People save chats as PDF to keep proof of an order, a payment promise, a rental agreement or a dispute. A PDF made with this tool is a faithful, readable copy of the export file. It is still a copy: the export is plain text that can be edited before it is opened, and the PDF does not prove who sent a message. If you may need the chat for a court case, a police complaint or a consumer forum, talk to a lawyer before you rely on the PDF, keep the original phone and chat untouched, and keep the original export file next to the PDF. This page is general information, not legal advice.
Privacy and consent
The file is read into this page's memory and never sent anywhere: no upload, no account, no copy kept by Broadchat. A chat also belongs to the other people in it, though. Keep the PDF for your own records, share it only with people who have a real reason to see it, and ask before you post someone's messages publicly. Do not open chats you were not part of.
Want numbers rather than a printout? The free WhatsApp chat analyzer reads the same export file and shows who texts more, reply times, busy hours, top words and emojis.
For businesses: keep chat history without exporting
Shops and service teams often export customer chats to save an order history or hand a conversation to a colleague. That works for a single case but not every day. On the WhatsApp Business API, every customer conversation lands in a shared team inbox where the whole team can search it, assign it and add notes, and the history stays with the business even when an employee changes phones or leaves.
