How to use the WhatsApp link generator
- Choose the country of your WhatsApp number. India (+91) is selected by default.
- Type the number. A green tick confirms it has the right length for that country.
- Write the message you want the customer to send you. They can still edit it before pressing send.
- Copy the link, or copy the HTML snippet if you want a button on your website. Use Open to test to try it on your own phone first.
Leave the number empty and you get a share link instead: it opens WhatsApp and lets the person choose any chat to send your text to. That suits referral messages such as "Try Sunrise Clinic, they take WhatsApp bookings".
Want to message someone else's number once, not share your own? Use send a WhatsApp message without saving the number: paste the number and the chat opens straight away.
How a wa.me link is built
A click-to-chat link has two parts: the number and an optional message. For Sunrise Clinic on 98290 12345 with the message "Hi, I want to book an appointment", the link is:
https://wa.me/919829012345?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20book%20an%20appointment
- Number: country code followed by the number, digits only. No
+, no leading0, no spaces or brackets. A typo here is the most common reason a link opens an error screen, which is why the tool checks the length for you. - Message: URL-encoded, so spaces become
%20, commas%2Cand line breaks%0A. Emojis and Hindi text are encoded the same way and arrive intact.
Where to put your link
- Instagram and Facebook bios, and the "WhatsApp" field of your Google Business Profile.
- A floating or inline button on your website (the HTML snippet above), especially on product, pricing and contact pages.
- Email signatures, invoices, delivery slips and SMS, where a tap is easier than typing a number.
- Printed material through a QR code: the WhatsApp QR code generator takes the same number and message.
Write a pre-filled message that tells you something
The pre-filled text is the first thing your team reads, so make it useful. "Hi, I'm interested in the 2BHK in Mansarovar (seen on Instagram)" tells a real estate agent the property and the source before they reply. Use a different message for each placement and you can tell which channel brings chats, with no UTM tags or link shorteners. Keep it to one or two lines and never ask people to type personal details such as ID numbers into it.
What happens after the customer messages you
When the customer sends that first message, it opens a 24-hour customer service window in which you can reply freely. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, those replies are service messages: since 1 Oct 2026 each business phone number gets 1,000 free per month, and Meta charges for service messages after that. The link itself works for any WhatsApp number, whether it is a personal number, the WhatsApp Business app or an API number. If several people answer chats, an API number with a shared team inbox stops chats from getting lost on one phone; the app vs API comparison explains when that switch makes sense.
