How to switch WhatsApp Business to normal WhatsApp (and back) without losing chats

Moving a number from the WhatsApp Business app back to regular WhatsApp: the backup that carries your chats, the Android and iPhone steps, what is left behind (catalogue, profile, tools), and what to do if the number is on the API.

In short

To switch WhatsApp Business to normal WhatsApp, back up your chats in the Business app (Google Account on Android, iCloud on iPhone), install WhatsApp Messenger, verify the same number and tap Restore. Chats and media come across; data from Business-only features such as the catalogue and collections does not. A landline number cannot make the move, because Messenger does not accept landlines, and a number connected to the WhatsApp Business API has to be disconnected or deregistered first.

Key takeaways

  • One number can be on WhatsApp Messenger or the WhatsApp Business app, not both at once, but WhatsApp lets you move between the two apps in either direction.
  • Your chats move through a backup: back up in the Business app first (Google Account on Android, iCloud on iPhone), then restore it in Messenger.
  • WhatsApp says data from features unique to the Business app, such as the catalogue and collections, is not transferred. Plan to lose the business profile and Tools-tab setup too.
  • Messenger does not accept landline numbers. A shop landline registered on the Business app cannot be moved to normal WhatsApp.
  • If the business should keep its chats while you take your personal number back, use Change number in the Business app first, then register the old number on Messenger.
  • A number on the WhatsApp Business API is not on any app; it must be disconnected (coexistence) or deregistered from Cloud API before Messenger can use it.

Move a number from the WhatsApp Business app to WhatsApp Messenger

Time needed: 30 min. You will need: The phone that runs WhatsApp Business, WhatsApp Messenger from Google Play or the App Store, Wi-Fi for the backup.

  1. Check the number can move

Make sure the number is a mobile number (Messenger does not accept landlines) and that it is not connected to the WhatsApp Business API through a provider. If it is, disconnect it first.

  2. Back up the WhatsApp Business app

In WhatsApp Business open Settings → Chats → Chat backup and tap Back up. On Android the backup goes to your Google Account (or WhatsApp cloud storage where available); on iPhone it goes to iCloud. Wait until it finishes.

  3. Install WhatsApp Messenger and verify the same number

Update WhatsApp Business, install WhatsApp Messenger, agree to the terms and enter or select the same number. Verify with the call or the 6-digit SMS code.

  4. Restore your chats and set up your profile

Allow access to contacts and media, tap Restore when Messenger finds the backup, then enter your name. Your chats and media appear; business-only data does not.

  5. Tidy up after the switch

Check that important chats restored, make a fresh backup in Messenger, and replace any business links, QR codes and website buttons that should now point to a different business number.

The short answer

Yes, you can switch WhatsApp Business to normal WhatsApp (WhatsApp calls the normal app WhatsApp Messenger) and keep your chats. WhatsApp's Help Center describes the move as a backup and restore: you back up the Business app, install Messenger, verify the same number and restore the backup. What does not come with you is anything built with Business-only features. WhatsApp names the catalogue and collections as examples. The two apps cannot share one number at the same time, so once Messenger is verified, that number stops working in the Business app.

This guide is for owners who want their personal number back after trying the Business app, or who are closing a business. If you want to keep running the business on WhatsApp, read the section on keeping the business on a new number first, because there is a better route than switching.

What moves and what stays behind

ItemAfter the switch to WhatsApp Messenger
Chats and mediaMove across if you restore a backup made in the Business app
Phone contactsStay in your phone's address book, so they appear in Messenger
Catalogue and collectionsNot transferred (stated by WhatsApp)
Business profile: categories, hours, address, website, descriptionBusiness-only fields; Messenger has no place for them
Greeting and away messages, quick replies, labelsBusiness app tools; set them up again if you ever return
Short link from ToolsBusiness app feature; a plain wa.me link to the number still opens a chat
Landline registrationNot possible on Messenger; landlines are accepted only on the Business app

The table is the honest summary of WhatsApp's own note: the migration "doesn't transfer data created by features unique to WhatsApp Business". WhatsApp lists the catalogue and collections as examples rather than giving a full list, so treat every setting you made in the Tools tab as staying behind. If your product photos and prices matter, save them before you start, because WhatsApp offers no way to carry the catalogue across.

Before you start

Three checks to make before you touch anything:

  1. Is it a landline? WhatsApp's list of unsupported numbers includes landlines, with the note that landlines are only accepted on the WhatsApp Business app. A shop landline cannot move to Messenger. Keep it on the Business app, or move the chats to a mobile number with Change number first (see our change number guide).
  2. Is it connected to the API? If an agency or provider connected the number to the WhatsApp Business API, the steps are different. See numbers on the API or coexistence below.
  3. Do you have space for the backup? On Android you need a Google Account on the phone, Google Play services and enough free space in that account. On iPhone you need iCloud with enough space. Use Wi-Fi; a backup with videos can be large.

Step 1: back up the WhatsApp Business app

WhatsApp says you need to back up before migrating from WhatsApp Business to Messenger. Messenger looks for that backup during setup.

  • Android: open WhatsApp Business → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up. Backups go to your Google Account, or to WhatsApp cloud storage where WhatsApp has rolled that option out. You can switch the provider under Cloud backup.
  • iPhone: open WhatsApp Business → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up now, which saves to iCloud. Before you rely on it, check iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Drive: Sync this iPhone must be on, with WhatsApp Business allowed to sync.

Wait for the backup to finish and note its time and size. Back up on the day you switch: WhatsApp warns that a backup more than 120 days old may not restore. If you use an end-to-end encrypted backup, make sure you know the password or 64-digit key: WhatsApp cannot recover it for you.

Step 2: install WhatsApp Messenger and verify the same number

On Android

  1. Update WhatsApp Business, then download WhatsApp Messenger from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open Messenger and agree to the Terms of Service.
  3. Enter the phone number you use on WhatsApp Business and tap Next.
  4. Tap Continue to verify by a call from WhatsApp, or tap Verify with SMS and type the 6-digit code.

On iPhone

  1. Update WhatsApp Business, then download WhatsApp Messenger from the App Store.
  2. Open Messenger and agree to the Terms of Service.
  3. Messenger recognises the number you used in WhatsApp Business. Tap the option with that number, then Continue.
  4. Enter the 6-digit SMS code. If iCloud Keychain is on and you verified this number on the same phone before, this step is skipped.

Step 3: restore your chats and set up the profile

On Android, tap Continue → Allow → Allow so Messenger can read your contacts, photos and media (Not now skips this). Messenger finds the most recent backup of your WhatsApp Business account. Tap Restore, then Next, enter your name and tap Next. On iPhone you create your Messenger profile and tap Done; when WhatsApp offers your iCloud backup, tap Restore Chat History. A backup made on Android cannot be restored on an iPhone, or the other way round, so switch apps on the same kind of phone.

WhatsApp restores messages first and media afterwards in the background, so keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charging until photos and videos reappear. Do not tap Skip at the restore prompt if you want your old chats: the next backup would replace the old one.

Step 4: tidy up after the switch

  • Open your three or four most important chats and check the history is there.
  • Make a fresh backup from Messenger (Settings → Chats → Chat backup).
  • Messenger and the Business app can stay on the same phone, but only with different numbers. If you later want a business account again, it needs another number, or the same one moved back.
  • Replace business links. A wa.me link, QR code or website button with this number now opens a personal chat. If customers should reach a new business number, regenerate them with the WhatsApp link generator and the QR code generator.

Keeping the business on a new number instead

Many owners who search for this are really trying to separate personal and business use. Switching moves all chats, including customer chats, into your personal Messenger account, and the business loses its profile and catalogue. There is a cleaner order of steps:

Your goalBest route
Close the business, keep personal chatsSwitch the number to Messenger (this guide)
Keep the business, take your personal number backBuy a new SIM for the business. In the Business app use Change number to move the business account to the new SIM, then register your old number on Messenger as a fresh account
Keep everything on one numberStay on the Business app; it does everything Messenger does

A worked example

Arjun teaches maths in Jaipur and moved his personal number to WhatsApp Business two years ago for his coaching batches. Now he has hired an office assistant and wants coaching enquiries off his personal phone. If he simply switched to Messenger, parents' chats would move into his personal account and his class catalogue would be lost.

Instead he buys a new SIM for the coaching centre, puts it in his phone and uses Change number in the Business app. The business account, with its chats and settings, moves to the new number, and WhatsApp offers to notify his contacts. He then hands that number to his assistant on a second phone, registers his old personal number on Messenger as a new account and starts with a clean personal WhatsApp. He loses his old personal chats on the Messenger side, which he accepts because almost all of them were with parents anyway.

Numbers on the API or coexistence

If your number was connected to the WhatsApp Business API through a provider, check which way it was connected:

  • Coexistence (the Business app and the API on one number). In India, Meta's coexistence option keeps the number in the Business app while a platform uses the API. Offboarding is done from the app itself: Settings → Account → Business Platform → Disconnect. Disconnect first, then follow the steps above. Chats your provider stored in its own inbox stay in the provider's system, not in the app.
  • API only. A number registered on Cloud API cannot be used with WhatsApp at all while it is registered. Meta's documentation says such a number cannot be used with the WhatsApp Business app again unless it is deregistered from Cloud API. Ask your provider to deregister or delete it. Deleting is done in WhatsApp Manager by a business portfolio admin, needs the two-step verification PIN if the number is connected, and is blocked if the number sent paid messages in the last 30 days. Message history held on the API side does not come back into the app.

If what you actually want is to keep the API and change provider, that is a different job: see migrating your WhatsApp number to a new provider. And if you are weighing the app against the API in the first place, the app vs API comparison sets out what each one is for.

Going the other way: normal WhatsApp to WhatsApp Business

Moving from Messenger to the Business app is the same idea in reverse and WhatsApp keeps your chat history in the process. Back up first, and save your contacts to the phone's address book: contacts saved only inside WhatsApp (the WhatsApp contacts feature) are not supported in the Business app and are lost in the move. Our WhatsApp Business account setup guide covers the steps and the profile fields to fill in afterwards, and the WhatsApp marketing strategy guide covers what to send once you are set up.

Agencies that manage WhatsApp for local clients get these questions often. If you set up numbers for clients, a white-label WhatsApp platform lets you run their API numbers under your own brand.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my chats if I switch from WhatsApp Business to normal WhatsApp?

Not if you back up first. Make a backup in WhatsApp Business (Google Account on Android, iCloud on iPhone), then verify the same number in WhatsApp Messenger and tap Restore. Chats and media come back. Data from Business-only features, such as the catalogue and collections, does not.

What happens to my catalogue and business profile?

They stay behind. WhatsApp says data created by features unique to WhatsApp Business, such as the catalogue and collections, is not transferred. Messenger has no business profile fields like hours, address or categories, so save product photos and prices separately before you switch.

Can I switch a landline number from WhatsApp Business to WhatsApp Messenger?

No. WhatsApp lists landlines among the numbers Messenger does not accept; landlines are only accepted on the WhatsApp Business app. Keep the landline on the Business app, or move its chats to a mobile number with the Change number feature first.

Can I use WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business on the same phone?

Yes, as long as each app uses its own phone number. One number cannot be registered on both apps at the same time. A dual-SIM phone with a personal SIM and a business SIM is the usual setup.

Can I go back to WhatsApp Business later?

Yes. WhatsApp lets you move between the two apps in either direction. Back up in Messenger, then install WhatsApp Business and select the number. You will need to rebuild the business profile, catalogue, labels and automatic messages, because they did not move to Messenger.

My number is connected to the WhatsApp API through an agency. Can I switch it to normal WhatsApp?

Yes, but it must leave the API first. A coexistence number is disconnected from the Business app under Settings → Account → Business Platform → Disconnect. A number used only on Cloud API must be deregistered or deleted by the provider or a portfolio admin in WhatsApp Manager before WhatsApp Messenger can use it.
