Definition

Meta Business Agent: Meta Business Agent is a pricing category Meta added to the WhatsApp Business Platform rate card on 1 July 2026 for Meta's own AI-agent messaging. It is billed per token rather than per message: $2.00 per 1 million tokens, which Meta's documentation works out to roughly 4 to 5 cents (US) per message. Unlike other charges, Meta Business Agent usage is billed even inside the free entry point window that Click-to-WhatsApp ads open.

Also called: Meta AI agent (WhatsApp pricing)

How it is priced

Every other WhatsApp Business Platform charge in Meta's rate card is a flat amount per delivered message in a category such as Marketing, Utility, Authentication or Service. Meta Business Agent is the exception: Meta bills it by tokens, the small chunks of text a language model processes, at $2.00 per 1 million tokens. Meta's own documentation translates that into an approximate per-message cost of 4 to 5 US cents, which is far higher than a utility or service message (India: ₹0.115, Meta rate card effective 1 Oct 2026).

The category also breaks the usual free-window rule. The free entry point window that opens after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad normally makes messages free for up to 7 days; Meta explicitly carves Meta Business Agent out of that exemption, so its token cost applies even inside that window.

Why it matters

  • A different cost shape. Because it is priced per token, not per message, the cost of a Meta Business Agent interaction depends on how much text the agent reads and writes, not on a flat per-message rate like the rest of the card.
  • Budget accordingly. At roughly 4 to 5 US cents a message, Meta Business Agent usage can cost several times a plain utility or service message, so it is worth knowing which feature on an account is generating the usage before approving a large rollout.
  • Not the same as the free entry point. Teams that assume Click-to-WhatsApp ad replies are always free for 7 days should check whether any of that traffic is routed through Meta Business Agent, since that part of the bill is not exempt.

Not the same as your own AI chatbot

Meta Business Agent is Meta's own agent product on the platform's rate card, billed to the Messaging account that uses it. It is a different thing from a business building its own AI chatbot on top of the WhatsApp Business API, for example with Broadchat's AI agents, which answer with a business's own instructions and knowledge base and whose only WhatsApp cost is the normal per-message rate for whichever category the reply falls into (usually Service, inside the window). Meta's separate rule barring general-purpose AI assistants as a number's main purpose, in force since 15 Jan 2026, is about what the bot is for, not about which pricing line it appears on; a business-specific support or sales chatbot remains allowed.

Frequently asked questions

What is Meta Business Agent on the WhatsApp Business Platform?

It's Meta's own AI-agent pricing category on the WhatsApp Business Platform rate card, added 1 July 2026, billed at $2.00 per 1 million tokens (about 4 to 5 US cents per message).

Is Meta Business Agent free during the Click-to-WhatsApp ad entry point window?

No. Meta's pricing documentation charges Meta Business Agent usage even inside the free entry point window that other message types get for up to 7 days after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad conversation starts.

Is Meta Business Agent the same as a business's own AI chatbot?

No. Meta Business Agent is Meta's own product and pricing line. A business's own AI chatbot, such as one built with Broadchat's AI agents, is billed at the normal per-message rate for the category of the reply, not per token.

Why is Meta Business Agent priced per token instead of per message?

Meta bills it per token because the cost of running the underlying AI model scales with how much text it reads and generates, unlike a template or service message, which is a flat rate regardless of length.
