Diwali WhatsApp marketing playbook for 2026: countdown, templates and budget

In short
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. For Diwali WhatsApp marketing, get templates approved by about 20 October, check your messaging limit and wallet by 23 October, start the first send around 29 October so a limited portfolio can finish, send the Dhanteras offer only to engaged contacts, and keep utility messages free of promotion. Budget for delivered marketing templates and for service replies beyond the free 1,000 per number.
Key takeaways
- Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November and Dhanteras on Friday 6 November; confirm local muhurat timings before you schedule time-sensitive offers.
- A portfolio at the 2,000 messaging-limit tier needs at least three days to reach 6,000 people, so the first send must start well before the festival week.
- Delivery cut-off notices are utility only when they go to customers with an open order and contain no offer; a 'last day to order' blast is marketing.
- At Meta's rate card effective 1 Oct 2026, 10,400 delivered marketing templates to India cost about ₹8,976 excl. GST before any platform charges.
- Staff the inbox for the replies your campaign creates, and budget for service messages beyond the free 1,000 per number per month.
Diwali WhatsApp marketing works when it is run like a production schedule rather than a single send. In 2026, Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday 8 November, Dhanteras on Friday 6 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November (check your local panchang). Puja timings vary by city, so check your local panchang before you promise anything for a specific hour. From today, 12 October, you have under four weeks. This playbook turns those weeks into a countdown, gives six template examples you can adapt, and works out an illustrative budget at Meta's current India rates.
It is written for businesses that already have opted-in customers on the WhatsApp Business Platform: jewellers, sweet shops, apparel and home brands, electronics dealers and gifting businesses. If you are starting from zero, build consent first with our guide to building a WhatsApp opt-in list; festival messages to people who never agreed to hear from you bring blocks at exactly the wrong time. For the year-round festive calendar and the broader approach, see WhatsApp festive campaigns.
The countdown: 12 October to 14 November
| Date (2026) | Days to Diwali | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 12-16 Oct | D-27 to D-23 | Fix the offer, stock and cut-off dates. Draft templates. Build segments. |
| 17-20 Oct | D-22 to D-19 | Submit templates with realistic sample values. Keep a plain backup of each. Build greeting images. |
| 21-23 Oct | D-18 to D-16 | Send test messages to your own team. Check the messaging limit and recharge the wallet for the whole plan. |
| 29 Oct | D-10 | First send: early-access preview to engaged customers. Starts early so a limited portfolio can finish. |
| 3-4 Nov | D-5 to D-4 | Delivery cut-off notices to customers with open orders (utility, no promotion). |
| 6 Nov | Dhanteras | Dhanteras offer to people who read or replied to the first send. |
| 8 Nov | Diwali | Greeting to recent customers, with a personalised image and no hard sell. |
| 12-14 Nov | After Bhai Dooj | Thank-you, exchange window or review request to buyers. |
Meta says template review can take up to 24 hours, but festival weeks are when you least want to discover a rejection. Submitting by 20 October leaves time to fix and resubmit twice. The template rejection guide lists the usual causes.
Segments: who gets which message
Not everyone should get all three marketing sends. A simple plan:
- Engaged (replied, tapped a button or bought in the last 90 days): all sends.
- Read-only (read something in the last 90 days, no reply): the D-10 preview and Dhanteras only if they read the preview.
- Cold (nothing read in 90 days): one message at most, or skip them this year. Diwali week is a bad time to test whether a cold list still wants you.
- Open orders: the utility cut-off notice only, through your order flow.
In Broadchat, tag past festival buyers in CRM → Tags and build these groups in CRM → Segment. After the D-10 send, open the campaign report, filter by read status, and use Retarget in CRM → Bulk Campaign to send the Dhanteras message only to those who read the preview. Meta's per-user marketing limits apply to everyone, so some engaged contacts will still fail with error 131049; that is normal, and a retry should wait at least 24 hours. Our broadcast best practices explain why engagement-based segments reduce these failures.
Six templates to adapt
Sample values are shown in brackets; replace them with your own. Keep variables away from the very start and end of the body, and give Meta realistic examples when you submit.
| Template name | Category | Body with sample values |
|---|---|---|
diwali_early_access_preview | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, our Diwali collection is ready a little early for regular customers. Would you like to see {{2}} before it goes public? [Show me] [Not this year] (Meera; the new silver diya sets) |
dhanteras_gold_booking | Marketing | Shubh Dhanteras, {{1}}! Book your gold coin or jewellery pickup slot for 6 November at our {{2}} store and skip the queue. Reply BOOK to pick a time. (Arjun; MI Road) |
diwali_corporate_hamper | Marketing | Hello {{1}}, planning Diwali gifts for your team? Our hampers start at {{2}} with free branding above 25 boxes. Want the catalogue? (Mr Agarwal; ₹1,499) |
order_delivery_cutoff | Utility | Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} is packed. It will be delivered by {{3}} if the address is confirmed today. Reply YES to confirm. (Priya; #48213; 5 Nov) |
diwali_greeting_card | Marketing | Happy Diwali, {{1}}! Thank you for shopping with us this year. Wishing your family light and good health. (Ankit) |
post_diwali_exchange | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, hope Diwali was lovely. If anything from your order needs a size change, our exchange desk is open until {{2}}. Reply EXCHANGE to start. (Neha; 20 Nov) |
The greeting and the exchange message are marketing even though they feel friendly: they come from a business and invite a purchase or return visit. For a larger library of festival wording, see the festive greeting templates, and the template guide for approval rules.
Personalised greeting images
A greeting card with the customer's name on it gets more attention than a stock banner. In Broadchat, Dynamic Experience → Image Experience lets you design one image with a name layer, then use it as the image header of diwali_greeting_card so each recipient gets their own version. Keep the design simple: a name rendered in a festive font over a diya photo reads better on a phone than a dense poster with offers in small print.
Check the limit and wallet by 23 October
Two checks stop most festival-week failures:
- Messaging limit. Your business portfolio can reach a fixed number of unique people outside an open chat in a rolling 24 hours: 250, 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 or unlimited. At the 2,000 tier, a 6,000-person preview needs at least three days, which is why the plan starts on 29 October. Check the tier in Channels → All Channels. Splitting the audience across numbers with a Rocket Campaign does not get around the limit when the numbers sit in the same portfolio, because the limit is shared.
- Wallet. Messages are not sent when the channel's conversation wallet is too low. Recharge for the whole plan before the week starts rather than topping up mid-campaign.
Illustrative budget
Illustrative only, with assumed delivery counts. A Jaipur home-decor brand plans the sends below. Rates are from Meta's rate card effective 1 Oct 2026 for India, excl. GST: ₹0.8631 per delivered marketing message and ₹0.115 per delivered utility message.
| Send | Delivered (assumed) | Category | Meta charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| D-10 preview | 5,700 | Marketing | ₹4,919.67 |
| Dhanteras offer | 3,500 | Marketing | ₹3,020.85 |
| Diwali greeting to buyers | 1,200 | Marketing | ₹1,035.72 |
| Delivery cut-off | 800 | Utility | ₹92.00 |
| Total | 11,200 | ₹9,068.24 |
Add service messages: agent and chatbot replies are free up to 1,000 per business phone number per month, then charged at ₹0.115 each under the same rate card effective 1 Oct 2026. If the team sends 4,000 replies in November, 3,000 are charged, about ₹345. Add GST, your platform subscription and any provider markup on top. The pricing calculator lets you rerun this with your own numbers, and what the WhatsApp Business API costs per message explains each line.
Staff the inbox
A good Diwali send generates questions: sizes, stock, delivery dates, gift wrapping, store hours. Prepare for them:
- Save answers to the ten most likely questions in CRM → Canned Replies.
- Add Match Keyword chatbots in Chatbots → Chatbots for the words your buttons and templates ask for (BOOK, EXCHANGE, catalogue) so the first answer is instant.
- Add a Working Hours step so replies on Diwali night get an honest "we are back on 9 November" message.
- Assign chats to people by department in CRM → Live Chat, and decide who covers Dhanteras evening.
Failure modes and fixes
| What goes wrong | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Template rejected on 4 November | Submitted late, promotional wording in a utility template | Submit by 20 October; keep a plain backup approved |
| Half the list not reached by Dhanteras | Messaging limit tier smaller than the audience | Start earlier, or send only to engaged contacts |
| Sends stop mid-campaign | Wallet balance ran out | Recharge for the full plan by 23 October |
| Many 131049 failures | Per-user marketing limits on less engaged contacts | Expected; retry after 24 hours with a fresh message, or skip |
| Blocks rise after the greeting | Too many messages to cold contacts | One message for cold contacts, or none |
After Diwali
Look at the campaign reports before the next festival: delivered, read, replied and failed per send, and which segment replied. Export them as CSV and match replies to orders; measuring WhatsApp campaign ROI shows how. Then move contacts who ignored all three sends into your cold segment, and plan the wedding season with what you learned. The full year-round approach is in our WhatsApp marketing strategy guide. Agencies running festive calendars for several clients can do it under their own brand through the partner program.

Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali 2026?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November depending on the panchang. Puja timings differ by city, so check a local panchang before you schedule time-specific offers.
How early should I submit Diwali WhatsApp templates?
About three weeks before the festival, so by 20 October in 2026. Meta says review can take up to 24 hours, but you also need time to fix and resubmit a rejected template and to test every approved one on your own phone.
Can a Diwali delivery reminder be a utility template?
Only if it goes to a customer with an open order and contains no promotion, for example confirming when their order will arrive. A message to everyone saying 'order by 4 November for Diwali delivery' is marketing, and Meta recategorises templates automatically.
How much does a Diwali WhatsApp campaign cost?
Meta charges per delivered template. Under Meta's rate card effective 1 Oct 2026, a marketing message to India costs ₹0.8631 and a utility message ₹0.115, excl. GST. In our illustrative plan, 11,200 deliveries came to about ₹9,068 before GST, service replies and platform charges.
Can I send Diwali greetings to all my contacts?
Only to contacts who opted in to messages from your business. A greeting from a business is a marketing template, counts toward per-user marketing limits and is charged as marketing. Sending it to cold or unconsented contacts risks blocks during your busiest week.
