WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery: the reminder flow, templates and timing
How to send cart reminders on WhatsApp without burning your number: consent, the marketing category, a two-nudge cadence, the Shopify workflow and honest metrics.

How the flow works
A checkout is left unfinished
A shopper enters their phone number at checkout, ticks the WhatsApp offers box and leaves without paying. Shopify records an abandoned checkout with a recovery link; a cart built from a WhatsApp catalogue appears under Ecommerce → Carts.
Wait, then check again
A workflow waits about an hour, then asks Shopify whether that checkout has since been completed. If the order went through on another device, the workflow stops and nothing is sent.
First nudge: a helpful reminder
If the cart is still open, the cart_reminder_1 marketing template goes out with the product name, the cart value and the recovery link, plus a quick-reply button for questions. No discount in this first message.
Questions go to a person or the bot
If the shopper replies, the 24-hour customer service window opens. A chatbot answers delivery, size and payment questions and hands anything else to an agent in the team inbox.
Second nudge, then stop
About 24 hours later, the workflow checks completion again. Still open: one final reminder, optionally with a small incentive you have budgeted for. After that the contact is tagged cart-lost and left alone.
Business: Hi Meera, you left the Jaipur block-print cotton bedsheet (king size, ₹2,349) in your cart at Rangoli Home. Your cart is saved here: rangolihome.in/cart/r/8KQ2. Reply if you have any question about size or delivery. [Complete my order] [I have a question]
Customer: I have a question
Business: Sure, Meera. What would you like to know? You can ask about size, fabric, delivery time or payment options.
Customer: Will it reach Pune before Saturday? And is COD available?
Business: Orders placed today usually reach Pune in 3 to 4 working days, so Friday is likely but not certain. Cash on delivery is available for this order. Want me to connect you to our team to confirm the date? [Yes, connect me] [No, thanks]
Customer: No, thanks. Ordering now.
Business: Thank you, Meera. Your cart link is above. We will send the order confirmation and tracking here once it is placed.
What WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery is, and the honest catch
WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery means sending a shopper who left checkout a short reminder on WhatsApp with a link back to their saved cart, and answering their last question in the same chat. It works well because the reminder lands in an app people open many times a day. The catch: a cart reminder is a marketing message template, not a utility one, and that shapes everything about consent, cost and frequency.
Why a cart reminder is marketing, not utility
Meta treats utility templates as messages about a transaction the customer already started and agreed to, such as an order confirmation or a delivery update. An abandoned cart has no order behind it: the reminder exists to persuade someone to buy. Meta's template categorisation puts that in marketing, and Meta re-checks categories automatically, so a cart reminder submitted as utility is likely to be recategorised. Write it as marketing from the start. Our template guide explains the categories in detail.
Three practical consequences follow:
- Consent: send only to shoppers who opted in to offers or reminders from your brand on WhatsApp. A phone number typed at checkout is not consent by itself. See opt-in best practices.
- Cost: marketing templates carry Meta's higher per-message charge. Current rates are on our WhatsApp API pricing explainer.
- Per-user limits: WhatsApp caps how many marketing templates one person receives, based on their engagement. A blocked send fails with error 131049; wait at least 24 hours before trying again, and never loop retries.
Templates to get approved
| Template name | Category | Sample |
|---|---|---|
cart_reminder_1 | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, you left {{2}} in your cart at Rangoli Home. Your cart is saved: {{3}}. Reply if you have a question. (Meera; Jaipur block-print bedsheet; rangolihome.in/cart/r/8KQ2) |
cart_reminder_final | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, your cart with {{2}} is still saved for today. Use code {{3}} for free shipping on this order. (Arjun; 2 cushion covers; SHIPFREE) |
cart_back_in_stock | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, {{2}} from your saved cart is back in stock in size {{3}}. Tap below to finish your order. (Priya; linen kurta; M) |
cart_price_drop | Marketing | Hi {{1}}, the price of {{2}} in your cart is now {{3}} until Sunday. (Rohan; ceramic dinner set; ₹3,199) |
Keep each body short, name your brand, and add a quick-reply button such as Stop offers so shoppers can opt out in one tap. Templates may take up to 24 hours to review, and Meta decides the outcome.
A timing ladder that does not annoy people
An illustrative cadence: the first reminder about one hour after abandonment, a final one about 24 hours later, then stop. Two touches catch shoppers who were interrupted, without turning your number into a nuisance. Leave the discount out of the first nudge: many shoppers were simply distracted, and an instant coupon trains them to abandon carts on purpose. If you use an incentive at all, keep it for the final message and budget for it.
Build it in Broadchat
- Connect your store's Shopify Admin API token under Automations → App Authentications (see the Shopify integration).
- Create and submit the two cart templates under CRM → WhatsApp Templates.
- In Automations → Workflow, start a workflow with the Shopify Abandoned Cart app to fetch new abandoned checkouts, add a Delay of about one hour, then use the app's status check to confirm the checkout is still incomplete before the send step.
- Send cart_reminder_1 with the shopper's name, product and the abandoned checkout URL, add a second Delay of about 24 hours, repeat the status check, and send cart_reminder_final only if it is still open.
- For carts built from your WhatsApp catalogue, watch Ecommerce → Carts; the Ecommerce → Trigger page can post an abandoned_cart_created event to your own webhook if you run the follow-up elsewhere.
- In Chatbots → Chatbots, add a Match Keyword trigger for the I have a question button, with Ask Question, Trained AI answers from your FAQ and an Assign to Agent step.
Failure modes and fixes
- Reminder sent after the customer already paid: you skipped the completion check or the delay is too long. Check status immediately before every send.
- Template recategorised or rejected: you submitted it as utility or used vague placeholders. Resubmit as marketing with real sample values.
- Quality rating drops: too many reminders or no consent. Cut to two nudges and send only to opted-in shoppers; read our note on quality rating and messaging limits.
- Many 131049 failures: WhatsApp is limiting marketing to those users. Do not retry within 24 hours; accept that some reminders will not be delivered.
Illustrative ROI
Illustrative only, not a forecast: a store sends 600 first reminders a month to opted-in shoppers with an average cart of ₹2,000. If 30 of those carts are completed within 72 hours of a reminder, that is ₹60,000 of recovered order value. Subtract Meta's marketing message charges for 600 to about 1,000 sends, your platform subscription, any incentive used in the final message, and the margin on orders that would have come back anyway. Measure against a holdout group that gets no reminder before you trust the number.
Agencies running cart recovery for several stores can offer it under their own brand through the partner program.

What to measure
- Recovered carts: abandoned checkouts completed after a reminder, divided by reminders delivered.
- Recovered revenue, counted only for orders completed within your attribution window (for example 72 hours).
- Replies per reminder, and the share of replies that needed an agent rather than the chatbot.
- Blocks and opt-outs per 1,000 reminders, watched together with the number's quality rating.
- Sends that failed with error 131049 (per-user marketing limit), to judge how many reminders WhatsApp is holding back.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send abandoned cart reminders as utility templates?
No. A cart reminder tries to persuade someone to complete a purchase that has not happened, which Meta classes as marketing. Meta recategorises templates automatically, so submit it as marketing and send it only to shoppers who opted in.
How many cart reminders should I send?
Two is a sensible ceiling for most stores: one about an hour after abandonment and one about a day later. Then stop. More reminders raise blocks and opt-outs, which can lower your quality rating.
Why did some cart reminders fail with error 131049?
WhatsApp limits how many marketing templates each person receives based on their engagement. When that limit is reached the send fails with 131049. Wait at least 24 hours before trying again and do not retry in a loop.
Does this work for WooCommerce stores?
The ready-made abandoned-checkout app in Broadchat workflows is for Shopify. For other stores, your store system can call the Broadchat API or a webhook when a cart is abandoned, and the same templates and chatbot can handle the rest.
Should the first reminder include a discount?
Usually not. Many shoppers were only interrupted, and an instant coupon teaches regular buyers to abandon carts for a code. Keep any incentive for the final reminder and track whether it changes completion enough to pay for itself.
