The problems WhatsApp solves for ecommerce and d2c brands
"Where is my order?" floods support
Most pre-delivery questions are about order status. Answering them one by one on phone or email ties up the team, while a timely WhatsApp update answers the question before it is asked.
Cash on delivery orders come back
COD is still a large share of orders for many Indian brands, and parcels refused at the door cost two-way shipping. A quick confirmation before dispatch filters out orders the customer no longer wants.
Shoppers want to ask before they buy
Size, fabric, compatibility and delivery-date questions decide many purchases. If the only answer is a contact form, the shopper leaves for a marketplace.
Email and SMS campaigns are ignored
Promotional email open rates are low and SMS is crowded. WhatsApp reaches customers in an app they open daily, which is exactly why it must be used carefully and only with consent.
Why WhatsApp works for online stores
For an Indian online store, WhatsApp sits at the two moments that decide margin: just before a purchase, when a shopper has one question left, and between order and delivery, when silence turns into support tickets and refused COD parcels. The WhatsApp Business Platform lets you automate both on one number, with a team inbox for the conversations a bot should not handle.
The order of work matters. Brands that start with promotional broadcasts often damage their number's quality rating before customers have a reason to trust the channel. Brands that start with useful order updates build a chat history customers recognise, and campaigns land better later.
What it costs to run
There are two cost lines. Meta charges per delivered template message, with marketing templates priced higher than utility ones and rates that vary by country; since 1 October 2026 service replies are free up to 1,000 per phone number a month, utility templates are charged even inside an open window, and chats that start from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad are free for up to 7 days when you reply within 24 hours. On top of that is the platform subscription. Our WhatsApp API pricing explainer shows how prepaid messaging wallets work, and Meta's own pricing page lists current rates.
Tools that make it work in Broadchat
- Templates and campaigns: create and sync templates, send them to segments, schedule them and retarget by delivery status.
- Chatbot builder: keyword and new-message triggers, product search, carts, the Send Order to Store step and hand-off to agents.
- Ecommerce module: a catalogue imported from Shopify or WooCommerce, carts, orders and payment links through gateways such as Razorpay.
- Team inbox and CRM: every chat in one place, with tags, custom fields and segments built from order data.
Ready-to-adapt order messages are in the order update template library. Agencies that run this playbook for several brands can do it under their own name through the partner program.
Use cases with example messages
Order and shipping updates
Send utility templates when an order is confirmed, shipped, out for delivery and delivered, each with the order number and a tracking link on your domain.
utility template
Business: Hi Priya, your order #48213 is on its way with Delhivery. Expected delivery: 17 Oct. Track it here: rangolihome.in/track/48213
Example message Cash on delivery confirmation
Ask COD customers to confirm with one tap before you ship. A chatbot connected to the quick replies updates the order, so confirmations need no manual follow-up.
utility template
Business: Hi Arjun, please confirm your cash on delivery order #48219 for ₹1,180 so we can ship it today. [Confirm order] [Cancel order]
Example message Selling inside the chat
A chatbot shows products from your catalogue, builds a cart and takes the order, with a payment link for prepaid orders. Orders can be created in Shopify or WooCommerce from the chat.
Reply inside the 24-hour window
Business: Here are our cotton bedsheets in king size. Tap a product to see photos and add it to your cart.
Example message Pre-sale questions and support
Route product questions from ads, the website chat widget and Instagram links into one shared inbox, with a chatbot answering common questions and handing the rest to an agent with the full history.
Reply inside the 24-hour window
Opt-in campaigns
Send launches, restocks and festive offers as marketing templates to segments of customers who opted in, and retarget people who read but did not reply. Keep frequency low enough that customers do not block you.
marketing template
Business: Hi Meera, the Diwali collection you asked about is back in stock. Reply SHOW to see it, or STOP to stop offers.

A rollout playbook
Collect opt-in at checkout
Add an unticked "Get order updates on WhatsApp" checkbox next to the phone number field, and a separate one for offers. Store both answers on the contact.
Launch the three core updates
Get order confirmation, shipped-with-tracking and COD confirmation templates approved and automated first. They cover most order-status questions.
Open the chat for pre-sale questions
Add a WhatsApp chat button to product pages and a chatbot that answers sizing, delivery and returns questions, with a clear option to reach a person.
Sell in the chat
Import your catalogue, then add product search, cart and order steps to the chatbot so customers can buy without going back to the website.
Add campaigns last, carefully
Start with your most engaged opted-in customers, a few messages a month, and watch your quality rating before widening the audience.
Compliance notes
- Only send marketing templates to customers who opted in to offers; order updates do not imply marketing consent.
- Keep order-update templates free of promotional wording so they stay in the utility category.
- Honour STOP and similar replies across every campaign, not just the one the customer replied to.
- Do not ask for card numbers, CVV or OTPs in chat; send a payment link from your payment gateway instead.

Frequently asked questions
Can WhatsApp reduce COD returns?
A confirmation step before dispatch lets customers cancel orders they no longer want before you pay for shipping, and catches wrong addresses and phone numbers early. The effect depends on your categories and customers, so measure your refusal rate before and after.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API or is the Business app enough for a store?
The app works for a handful of chats a day handled from one phone. Automatic order updates, a chatbot, several agents on one number and store integrations need the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp?
Customers can pay through a payment link from your gateway, such as Razorpay, sent in the chat. Card details should never be collected in the chat itself.
