Definition
Embedded Signup: Embedded Signup is Meta's onboarding flow that a WhatsApp platform shows inside its own website. In one pop-up, a business logs in with Facebook, chooses or creates its business portfolio and WhatsApp Business Account, adds and verifies a phone number, sets a display name, and grants the platform access. From 15 Oct 2026, Meta requires version 4 of the flow; versions 2 and 3 are deprecated.
Also called: ES, Meta Embedded Signup, WhatsApp signup pop-up
The steps inside the pop-up
- Log in with the Facebook account that administers your company.
- Choose a business portfolio, or create one.
- Choose or create a WhatsApp Business Account.
- Add the phone number and enter the code Meta sends by SMS or voice call.
- Set the display name customers will see. Meta reviews it.
- Confirm access for the platform's app. The pop-up closes and the platform registers the number.
A variant of the flow is used for coexistence: the business confirms the connection from its WhatsApp Business app (v2.24.17 or later) instead of moving the number off it, and the number keeps working in the app.
Version 4 and the onboarding caps
Meta deprecates Embedded Signup v2 and v3 on 15 Oct 2026; platforms must use v4. Meta also caps how many new businesses one provider can onboard: 10 per rolling 7 days by default, 200 after business verification, App Review and access verification, and more only for Meta Business Partners.
Common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No SMS code arrives | Number is active on WhatsApp and not eligible for coexistence, or SMS blocked | Use the voice-call option, or the coexistence flow in a supported country |
| Pop-up closes with no number | Window closed before the last step | Run the flow again; existing assets can be selected |
| Wrong portfolio chosen | Logged in with an agency's Facebook account | Log in as the business's own admin |
| Display name pending | Meta's name review | Wait for the review result; edit the name if it is rejected |
Example
Meera, owner of Rangoli Home, opens her panel and clicks connect. She picks the Rangoli Home portfolio she uses for Instagram ads, creates a new WhatsApp account, enters the shop's mobile number, types the code from the SMS, and enters "Rangoli Home" as the display name. The whole flow takes a few minutes; the display name review can take longer.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a verified business to complete Embedded Signup?
No. You can connect a number before business verification. Verification matters later, for example as one path to a higher messaging limit and more phone numbers.
Can I use a number that is already on WhatsApp?
In India and other supported countries, yes: the coexistence variant keeps the number on the WhatsApp Business app. Otherwise the number must first be deleted from the app.
Who owns the WhatsApp account created during Embedded Signup?
The business portfolio you chose in the pop-up. Choose your own company's portfolio, not your agency's, so the number stays yours.
