Definition
WhatsApp Business Account (WABA): WABA means WhatsApp Business Account: the account inside a Meta business portfolio that holds a company's WhatsApp Business Platform assets, such as its API phone numbers, approved message templates and payment settings. Every number that sends through the Cloud API belongs to exactly one WABA. Meta is now splitting the WABA into a WhatsApp account and a Messaging account, while existing IDs keep working.
Also called: WABA, WhatsApp Business API account, WhatsApp account (new account model)
How a WhatsApp Business Account works
A WhatsApp Business Account sits one level below your business portfolio (the container formerly called Business Manager). The portfolio represents your company; the WABA represents your WhatsApp presence. One portfolio can own more than one WABA, for example one per brand or per country, and each WABA can hold several phone numbers.
Three things live on the WABA:
- Phone numbers. Each has its own phone number ID, display name and quality rating.
- Message templates. A message template is approved for the account and can be sent from any of its numbers.
- Payment settings. Meta bills the WABA, either through a card added by the business or through a Solution Partner's credit line.
Most businesses never create a WABA by hand. It is created during Embedded Signup, the Meta pop-up a platform shows when you connect a number.
The new account model
From 23 Sep 2026 Meta began rolling out a new account model that splits what used to be one WABA into a WhatsApp account and a Messaging account. Meta expected the rollout to reach everyone by mid-October 2026. Existing IDs and access tokens keep working, so integrations do not break. You will see both names in WhatsApp Manager; in day-to-day conversation, "WhatsApp Business account" still covers both.
One practical change: for accounts on the new model, moving a number between partners is no longer done as a migration. The business shares its WhatsApp account with the new partner instead.
Example
Meera runs Rangoli Home, a home-decor brand in Jaipur, and Sunrise Clinic, a separate dental practice. Both companies sit in one business portfolio. She keeps two WABAs: one for Rangoli Home with its order-updates number, and one for Sunrise Clinic with the appointment number. Templates for festive sale offers stay on the Rangoli Home account, so clinic staff never see or send them, and each brand's Meta invoice is separate.
Why it matters
- Ownership. The WABA should belong to the business's own portfolio. If an agency creates it in the agency's portfolio, the client depends on that agency to keep the number.
- Limits and quality. The messaging limit is now set per business portfolio and shared by its numbers, while quality is tracked per number.
- Templates. A template is tied to one WABA. A second WABA means submitting templates again.
In Broadchat
When a client connects a number under Channels → All Channels, Embedded Signup either creates a new WABA or lets them pick an existing one. The channel card then shows the number's status, quality rating and messaging limit as reported by Meta, and templates created in CRM → WhatsApp Templates are filtered to the WABA of the selected channel. Frequently asked questions
Is a WABA the same as the WhatsApp Business app?
No. The WhatsApp Business app is a phone app for small teams. A WABA is the Meta account behind the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). With coexistence, one number can be used in both, but the WABA is still the account that the API side runs on.
Where do I find my WABA ID?
Open WhatsApp Manager from your business portfolio; the account ID is shown in the account overview. Platforms such as Broadchat store it automatically when you connect through Embedded Signup, so you rarely need to copy it.
Should my agency own my WABA?
Usually not. Keep the WABA in your own business portfolio and give the agency or platform access. That way the number, its templates and its quality history stay with you if you change providers.
